General Information...


¨      The Alumni Board is comprised of 22 members representing various class years, majors, backgrounds, professions, and geographic areas, and residing throughout Montana and other states.


¨      Alumni Association Directors are elected for a three-year term.

¨      Currently, meetings are held three times each year--in the fall, winter, and spring.  The 2007 meeting dates are as follows:



  • Winter Meeting February 28 & 29, 2008
  • Spring Meeting, May 1 & 2, 2008
  • Homecoming Meeting and New Board Member Orientation - September 22 & 23, 2008 - campus.  
  •  You are responsible for making your own travel and accommodation arrangements. At this time, the Association is unable to offer reimbursements for these expenses.  However, these expenses are considered tax-deductible.

What to expect at a meeting...


¨      You will receive a Board packet via email or cd two to three weeks prior to each meeting.  The packet will contain a meeting agenda, minutes from the previous meeting, and other pertinent material.  A Board Liaison will request your RSVP for each meeting.    


¨      Terms, election process, and other additional information are outlined in the Bylaws.

Description
The purpose of The University of Montana Alumni Association is to support the goals of the University and to represent the voice of alumni in the strategic planning process of the University.  Its primary service focuses upon five areas:  (1) enhancing communication among University leaders and alumni, (2) student recruitment, (3) career networking, (4) alumni programs, (5) Legislative Advocacy.


Qualifications
A member of the Alumni Board of Directors is selected to hold the position based on his/her commitment to The University of Montana and to the goals of the Alumni Association, distinguished personal and/or vocational achievement.  Other desired qualifications include the ability to motivate individual members and committees; proven leadership in other organizations, associations, or clubs; the ability to set and achieve goals and objectives; ability to work as a team player.  Directors will be representative of the diversity of the Alumni Association membership.  All persons who are eligible for designation alumna/alumnus of The University of Montana and who are dues-payers of the Association are eligible for consideration for the Board of Directors. 


Responsibilities
In accepting the three-year appointment, you agree to fulfill the responsibilities associated with Board membership:


¨      Attendance.  Regular attendance at the Board meetings is expected to be a high priority.  If any member of the board of directors shall miss more than two (2) meetings, whether regular or special, without being excused by the president of the Association, then said director may be removed from the board upon a majority vote of the voting members of the board of directors.


¨      Attend campus alumni programs when possible, including Homecoming.


¨      Assist with planning and implementing alumni programs in your area.


¨      Serve on standing committee(s) of the Alumni Board and actively participate in the functions of the committees.


¨      Exercise loyalty toward the Board and confidentiality regarding its internal affairs as discussed at Board meetings.


¨      Seek out and encourage talented alumni for volunteer roles such as the Board of Directors or House of Delegates membership.


¨      Assist in identifying individuals for the Distinguished Alumni Award.


¨      Serve as an ambassador and advocate for The University of Montana.  Become a representative and spokesperson in your community for the University.  This could involve talking with prospective students, meeting with other alumni, communicating with area legislators, attending local alumni events, etc.


¨      Assist the University and the Office of Alumni Relations in identifying and implementing programming that will enhance the student experience at The University of Montana, thus helping to mold more loyal alumni.


¨      Become familiar with the programs and activities sponsored, organized, and coordinated by the Alumni Association and participate in them to the extent possible.  Stay abreast of campus news by reading alumni publications and other University material.


¨      Offer ideas to help make the Board of Directors and the Alumni Association more meaningful to the alumni constituency and initiate Board activities and initiatives.


¨      Help the Alumni Relations staff evaluate programs and take initiative in informing them of opportunities for program development and/or funding.


¨      Provide sensitivity and support to staff members and other Board members as they perform their duties.


Board Member Measures of Success

¨     
You are recruiting new alumni volunteers.


¨      The committees on which you serve are active and growing.


¨      The alumni district/region in which you reside/work is active and growing, and you are helping The University of Montana gain greater recognition in your workplace and community.


¨      Your volunteer efforts are having a positive impact on alumni participation in a variety of ways.  You are helping to increase:  dollars raised through the Alumni Membership; attendance at alumni events; alumni involvement in student recruitment and career networking and placement initiatives, and other alumni programs.


¨      The goals and objectives you set for yourself, your committee, and/or your district/region are realized within original timeframes and budgets (or within reasonable extensions).

As a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, you will receive tremendous personal and professional satisfaction by giving of yourself to your alma mater and to fellow alumni.  You will be recognized in the Montanan magazine, the UMAA web site, and through other relevant venues as much as possible.
